Mountain Dulcimers are among the easiest stringed instruments to play and are very popular. I built a number of these, all hourglass design with various carved pegheads. I can carve the typical scroll peghead, but for really beautiful carvings of animal heads, I enlist the help of Greg Smoot, an award winning woodcarver from Longmont.
Typical Configuration
- There are many woods of different colors and hues available for creating unique instruments.
- A carving by Greg Smoot can be added to the peghead. Shown here are three dulcimers: traditional scroll, the head of a Red Fox, and the head of a Harris Hawk.
- Strings and stringing patterns can be chosen.
- Finish is wipe-on urethane.
